Samsung R580 Hawk in the test

Samsung has with the R580 Hawk a 15.6-inch notebook with 2.4 GHz Core i5 and GeForce GT330M offer. ZDNet has tested what has to offer about 800 € more expensive device.

The chassis of the R580 Hawk is covered with a red gloss paint, which turns on the corners in black. The look is interesting, but likely not meet everyone's taste. In addition, fingerprints on the paint can be seen clearly. When processing any weaknesses are noted.

Samsung has packed in a Chicklet-keyboard with number pad, provides the basis of a defined pressure point a clean and comfortable writing. Getting used to the contrary, the multi-touch enabled touchpad, which is hardly recognizable at first. It looks just like the palm rest, the surface is not hochglanzbeschichtet but roughened hp pavilion dv4t battery. You can feel it though, a clearer definition would be desirable. Four LEDs on the corners to ensure that it recognizes the touchpad in dark environments. The control of the mouse works accurately.

The 15.6-inch display with LED backlight solves 1366 by 768 pixels. The glossy coating provides disturbing reflections. The vertical viewing angle is not convincing: Even in mild display tilt it comes to color distortions. Also the view from the side, if you want to view example images together to be desired, can be left. The display frame with a 1.3-megapixel webcam is integrated.

The notebook has four USB 2.0 ports, one of which is performed in combination with eSATA. Extensions can be made via the ExpressCard 34 slot. Displays can be analog or digital via VGA connect via HDMI. Even after 802.11b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth 2.1 are on board. A reader can be found on the front page.

The R580 is powered by an Intel Core i5-520M, which is clocked at 2.4 GHz and has 3 MB of cache. The Turbo Boost function clocked single cores up to 2.93 GHz. The processor has a Hardwarbeschleunigung for AES encryption, which, for example, programs such as WinZip benefit 14 Packing encrypted archives.

The Core in i5 integrated graphics unit is not used. For colorful images on the display instead provides a discrete Nvidia GeForce 330M GT with 1 GB of memory. It is a mid-range chip, the DirectX 10 games running smoothly with medium details. In 3D Mark 06 (DirectX 9 games) reached the notebook 7432 points.

The chip is CUDA-enabled and can therefore be used for the encoding of videos to complete. Unlike the 5000 series from ATI to Nvidia GPU but offers no DirectX 11 support.

The R580 has 4 GB of DDR3 RAM. Because Windows 7 is installed Home Premium 32-bit version, but it can only 3 GB can be used. The hard disk with 5400 revolutions per minute capacity of 500 GB. The optical drive a DVD burner is integrated.

Overall, the R580 high performance. PC Mark Vantage benchmark in the application it reaches a good 6121 points.

Due to the Nvidia graphics-hungry lenovo thinkpad z60t battery holds a capacity of 4400 mAh while surfing the Web, only about two and a half hours through. At low load, the fan of the notebook is barely audible, as it does not run most of the time. In the more than one key combination activated Silent Mode, which limits the CPU clock to 1.2 GHz, one can therefore dispense. Under full load the device is considerably more visible, but still not annoying.

The Samsung R580 Hawk for about 800 € a high performance level sufficient for modern 3D games. However, you should defer the details of something, because no fluid display is possible. The fan is relatively quiet even at high utilization. Compromises necessary to make the display, the reflective coating causes reflections. The viewing angle could be better.
